I first want to thank everyone who joined in our LIVE Teleseries call last night titled: From Yes to I Do - Wedding Photography.  We had a great turnout and some really information Q&A's!  If you missed it, don't worry, the replay will be available next Tuesday.  We will continue this series next month as well, so join in next time if you haven't already!
So today I wanted to go over my top questions to ask your potential wedding photographer.  It is so important to ask the right questions, I can't stress that enough!  So ... I know you're all dying to find out ...
The Bridal Solution's Top 5 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before You Book

5.  What is a Typical Wedding Day Like with You as a Photographer?
You will want to make sure you photographer captures the important moments with you.  You'll want an ease and flow to your wedding day, and you'll need to make sure your photographer is on board as well.  Go ahead, ask them what a typical wedding day is like for them!  If they are experienced, this will be an easy question!
4.  Will You be Shooting My Wedding Alone, or Will You Have A Second Photographer With You?
If it's in your budget, you most certainly want a second photographer their the day  of your wedding.  There is no possible way a single photographer can get all the important images.  Just think, do you want to choose between a photo of you walking down the aisle, or  your grooms face when he first sees you?  I didnt' think so!  Make sure there are at least 2 with you for the majority of the day!  You can thank me later! :)
3. What All is Included in Your Wedding Packages?
This question is important because you'll need to budget for photos.  When a photographer prices is lower than their competitors, you'll have to wonder.  Is it due to experience or is it that they are pricing on an a la carte option?  The longer the photographer has been in the business, the more experienced and educated they are.  Most likely, their price will show that.  If the photographer is basing everything a la carte, then you could be paying a higher price in the end.  There are a lot of back end pricing when it comes to photography, so it's better to get an upfront cost and ask what all is included at the very beginning!
2.  Do you Direct or Document More?
Basically you are wanting to figure out if the photographer likes to take more photos that are posed or more candid shots. It could be that they do a little bit of both.  Whatever they say, make sure their styles fits with your vision for wedding photos.

1.  Do You Carry Backup Equipment and Insurance for Each Wedding?
This is a must!  You want to make sure that they carry the equipment necessary to capture your day, and that they back it up.  Not a month after your wedding, but SOON after your wedding.  Can you seriously imagine having no weddings photos?  Make sure to ask this MOST important question!

Top 5 Mistakes Brides Make When Planning Their Wedding

You've just got engaged and you're over the moon with happiness and excitement! Now you're wondering what to do next. Do you run to the store and pick up the newest wedding magazine or do you start selecting the date? Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting and stressful times of your life no doubt. There are so many decisions to be made, research to be done and tasks to be completed, it's hard to know where to start.

Working with literally HUNDREDS of brides, I know just how stressful the process can be. But if you do your research and have a professional to guide you, you most likely wont make The Bridal Solution's top 5 mistakes that brides make when planning their wedding.

These mistakes are looked over so often that they lose their importance. Really take a minute to read each one and apply it your wedding.

#5. Budget

Let's get right down to the nitty gritty. This should be the top priority after you get engaged. You need to sit down with all parties participating and get a clear idea of 1: how much a wedding in your area typically costs and 2: how much you have available to use on your wedding. When you have a clear and concise budget, you need to stick with it. It's easy to go over budget, so by understanding and not compromising your budget, you'll be less stressed out.

Budgets also help your vendors. For one, you need to create an itemized budget and select vendors within it. When you get engaged, choose 3 to 4 elements of your wedding that you are not willing to compromise on. Maybe you have to have this certain dress, or you REALLY want your pictures to be amazing, so you're willing to spend a little extra. Either way, make sure those 3 to 4 items are on the budget and budgeted for. This will probably be a give an take. If you're spending more money on your dress, then maybe cut down on the cake, or alcohol? Make sense?

A huge mistake brides make is not being clear with your vendors what your budget is. It's a waste of every one's time if you sit down with your florist and they show you bouquets and centerpieces that are not in reach. But if you tell them you have $5,000 to use on flowers and here is the overall look, they can work around it. This goes for all your vendors. We know you have a budget so share it ... let's not take up precious wedding time by looking at weddings we can't afford, and start planning a wedding that is within your budget with elements that you love! When budgeting, allow for a 5% fluff ... that last month there will be things here and there you think of, and it's an added cost. That way you will be prepared!

#4. Not Giving yourself Enough Time

I know sometimes the excitement is overwhelming, but take your time during the planning process. If you know you are going to spend the rest of your life with someone, what is the big deal taking your time and adding a few more months to the engagement? Am I right? Find time to do your research. This will relieve stress, and will be fun to do. Try different cake samples, do menu tastings, see vendor's work. A wedding takes over 400 hours to plan from start to finish ... most of you have jobs or are in school ... don't make your wedding another job ... HAVE FUN! It may take you 2 to 3 months to even figure out what your style is, and when you do figure it out, don't rush it, enjoy it!

#3. Hire the right vendors

I can not tell you how important this is. It takes time to find the right vendors. Like in mistake #5, once you figure out your wedding style, find vendors who compliment that. If your style is rustic chic, don't reserve the art gallery because you get a percentage off this month. Find a photographer who has done a wedding like yours in the past, one who will use the outdoor elements to better represent you and your style. The right vendors are key, and my right vendors will most likely be different than your right vendors ... and that is OK! Call them up, ask for their references, ask about past awards, and most importantly, see their work. In fact, ask them to show you a wedding similar to yours around the same budget. Taste, Sip & See ... taste their food, drink their wine, and see what they can create for you. It's your wedding, and if your wedding isn't top priority for them, then they are your not vendor. Just because a vendor takes 30 weddings a year, doesn't make them the best. They will need costumer service and time in their schedule to accommodate YOU!

When it comes to vendors I hear a couple of things ... 1. make sure, and I mean MAKE SURE, your entertainment is rock solid. You don't want crickets chirping and your don't want music to make your guests go to sleep. Whether it's a band, dj or pianist ... make it fun! 2. Make sure the vendors that you do choose, play well with others. Meaning, we all work together, and when all of us play nicely, the wedding will go off without a hitch! And lastly, #3. hire a videographer too. SO many brides tell me they wish they would have got their wedding on tape. It's one day and memories have a tendency to fade. You'll be glad you did!

#2. Hire a Wedding Coordinator

To me, this is a no brainer. Our motto at The Bridal Solution is "let your guests be your guests." I know Aunt Mary wants to help set up and I know your family plans to stay later after everyone leaves to clean up. BUT, a relaxed bride is a happy bride. Allow yourself for one day to let go and have someone, outside of your family, help with the wedding. You will be SO GLAD you did. In many cases, after the wedding is all said and done, I will hear having a wedding planner there was they best well spent money of the entire wedding. It's because the details were taken care of, there are no worries, and your style and overall look was carried out.

Imagine at midnight the guests begin to leave and you look back at your mom and dad, they just spent all this money on your wedding, the day is done, and they are sitting down enjoying each other's company, champagne in hand. Music stops, mom picks up her shoes after kicking them off in the middle of a dance, and after all of this, they get to go home and sleep. Or you can imagine lights coming on in the ballroom, guests begin to leave, and mom and dad are running from table to table to collect the centerpieces, rentals and linens. They aren't sure where the staff placed the top layer of your wedding cake, and they have a car full of gifts as is.

Trust me, the best gift your parents can give you on your wedding day is no stress. And the best gift you can give back to them, is the same thing! Whether it's The Bridal Solution or someone else, don't make this top mistake.

And the number one mistake brides make when planning their upcoming wedding ...

#1. Make your Wedding Unique to YOU

Your wedding should reflect you and your style. The most unforgettable weddings that I've planned have one common aspect ... the personalities of the bride and groom are shown throughout the wedding day. Sit down and really think about what things in life make you happy. What are you quirks? What makes you .. YOU? This is what will make your wedding unforgettable. There are no rules and restrictions. Free your personality and add your personal touches and details. Your wedding guests will no doubt love every aspect of it, taking it home with them and always remembering the day.

TBS Wedding Tip: Planning a Vintage Wedding

Planning a wedding in general is a difficult task. There are a lot of decisions to be made, and most of the time, these decisions rely heavily on another decision. It's a domino effect, and if you haven't planned a wedding before, it's hard to know exactly where to start. Planning a "Vintage Style" wedding is no different. But if you decide to have a vintage flair added to the overall look, you need to stick with that decision and see it through. To have a beautiful vintage wedding, everything from the attire to the location needs to scream "vintage."

Here is how to get started...

You'll need to decide on an era. If you're going for the roaring 20's, or are you headed in the 60's glam direction? Either way, you'll need to choose and stick with it. This will help you with decisions down the road.

Once you have decided on an era, turn your attention to attire. You'll want to choose a dress similar to those specific times. Think about your veil, purse, jewelery, etc. You'll need to do the same thing for the groom and groomsmen attire. Think bow ties, suspenders, hats, etc. Don't be afraid to mix and match, everything wasn't "perfect" back then, and if little details were dispersed, it will give your pictures a more interesting feel.

The next step you'll need is deciding what photographer to use. There are quite a few options here, but if you're planning a vintage wedding, you'll want a photographer who is capable of taking pictures either with a filter, film, or the ability to edit your photos so they look slightly older. You'll need to discuss this with the photographer you're looking into, and make sure they understand your vision.

Location, location, location. This can truly "make it" or "break it." If you are planning a vintage style wedding, the last thing you want to do is have your ceremony or reception in a large ballroom, or uber modern space. This is going to take away from your theme. Try some place like a restored barn, or an outdoor location. I did a beautiful wedding last year in a restored old farm house ... it was stunning!

The rest is all in the details. It will come down to the cake, the decor, the lighting, etc. If you want a vintage feel, you're going to have to bring in a lot of charm. This doesn't necessarily mean spending a lot of money. This could be anything from bringing in antique chairs for the guest tables, using old tins around the centerpieces, bringing in old furniture for a lounge space. Don't be afraid to bring elements from the outside, inside. All of this will turn heads, and give you the wedding with a vintage feel. Don't forget, it's all about the details! When you think you're done ... keep going :)

Wedding Tip: Hire a Florist without the Price Tag

These days that chance that you will have beautiful blooms throughout your wedding is pretty typical. It's not hard to see why, they create an ambiance, the smell, and the subtle glow of real flowers with candlelight is hard to beat.

I for one, do not recommend using fake flowers. I promise you that it will not give the same effect as real flowers do. Your pictures will not be as pretty, and basically, your guests will know they are not real ... bummer. HOWEVER, it's so easy to get the real flower look for less.

For one, use your local flower market. Have family members, friends or your wedding planner create the look from in season blooms ... you will save lots of money!

Check out this DIY centerpiece from Inspired Bride ... it basically costs nothing!!

Second: You do not need all flowers in your arrangement. Look at this picture for example. You could achieve this look with a Styrofoam floral ball and adhere moss ... still elegant, and give the high price tag look!

As a planner, I believe you should still hire a florist with all wedding decor needs. It will take the stress away from you, but they will know what flowers are in season, and will most likely work in your budget. Use real flowers and more greenery. And if you are going to tackle the flowers yourself, give the majority of the responsibility to someone you trust, so that you don't get too overwhelmed the week of your wedding.

Wedding Tip: Importance of Insurance

With all the devastating news of tornado's and natural disasters in my home state, I started to think about things from a wedding stand point. For instance, what if your wedding came on a day that a tornado rips through the area, or flash flooding suddenly took over your ceremony location? What if your bridal salon where you dress is being held goes up in flames, or a tornado took out the entire store?

This post is not to worry you as a bride, but it's to prepare you. The one thing as wedding coordinators we can no control is the weather. Sure we always have back up plans, but if something should happen, like Joplin, Missouri, what is a bride to do?

I am sure you have heard or seen the brochures about wedding insurance. I am also sure you thought to yourself "just another expense for the wedding." Some venues require you to purchase insurance, but most do now. And if you are a bride who has not considered wedding insurance, I am here to tell you ... DO IT!

You can not foresee the future, and it just takes that one little thing to go wrong, and to prevent you from having the wedding of your dreams. I use WedSafe most of the time. It's a great resource for brides and planners. WedSafe covers about everything from unpredictable illness, weather, no show vendors, damage to gifts and to the bride's dress. They also have a liability insurance you can purchase, which I love for my clients to purchase if they are hosting an event at their home.

You can visit WedSafe here, and get quotes right on their website. You will be surprised how inexpensive it really is, especially for all the coverage you get in return. Do yourself a favor, and purchase wedding insurance, you just never know!

TBS Wedding Tip: Wedding Day Makeup

So many brides ask me about wedding day makeup. Should they do their own, who do I recommend, will they come to us, what products do they use? These are ALL things to consider for your big day. Although I suggest to have your makeup done professionally WITH a trial run before hand, I do have to say this is a great video to show you how to do the basic wedding day makeup.

If you are comfortable doing it yourself and don't have money in the "Beauty Budget" for an expensive makeup artist, then check this out ... you tube is a great tool to use!

Inspiration: Floral Savors

Go ahead ... take a guess ... what kind of flowers do you think they are...

what if I told you they were carnations? Yep, my jaw dropped too! I bet you didn't know carnations could look so good! Now I am the first person to admit that I would not be caught dead with carnations in my flower arrangements ... but now ... if you do it right ... they could like these. Talk about beautiful!

I my opinion, I LOVE when brides use just one type of flower. Something about the simplicity can make carnations, or even baby's breath look elegant. Check out my blog posts about baby's breath here and here.

Here's to saving money!

101 Party Do's & Don'ts

In the November Issue of House Beautiful, they featured 101 Party Do's & Don'ts. Since I absolutely LOVE to entertain, and since most wedding receptions are about entertaining your guests, I thought I would share a few of my favorites with you all.

#6 Warm plates before serving hot food on them

#15 Let gets make their own cocktails. I have a few favorite recipes on cards, and all the ingredients on hand. People mix and shake and think it's super fun

#35 Always seat your guests by someone they know and someone they'd enjoy getting to know

#55 Never use paper napkins

#99 Don't be afraid to set up a dinner table in an unconventional or not-the-usual spot for a more interesting dinner or lunch - in the library among the books or out on the porch.

Hope you all get a chance to pick up a copy for yourself, they there are a lot more great tips just in time for Thanksgiving!

Wedding Planning Tip: The Space

When you are planning your wedding, don't forget to plan the perfect place to get ready. In my experience, it's the best when you bring your vendors to you (hair & makeup). Make sure your comfortable, and the space is large enough to accomodate your group. You'll want to get ready in a place that has charm, but also has natural light. Make sure your photographer is available to capture these memories as well! Last but not least, find the perfect place to hang your dress. You'll want it out of the way, but also highlighted for all your attendants to see, it will make for some great pictures!
